WHCR 90.3 FM: The Voice of Harlem

WHCR-FM 90.3, “The Voice of Harlem,” is a community radio station licensed to New York City and owned by the City College of New York. For four decades it has given upper Manhattan a station that sounds like upper Manhattan: many languages, many musical traditions, and plenty of opinions. It’s non-commercial, and listeners and local underwriters keep the lights on.

On the Air

On a Tuesday morning in the summer of 1986, station manager Vincent Thomas sat atop City College’s hilltop campus and announced that WHCR was on the air. The first studio was a crowded room on the NAC’s first floor, with turntables and tape players sitting on college-issue desks. Thomas wanted more than a broadcast. He hoped neighborhood residents would get directly involved in programming and help preserve Harlem’s oral tradition.

New menopause treatment guidelines

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists now strongly recommends hormone therapy for hot flashes and related sleep problems in women who can safely take it, ideally started before age 60 or within 10 years of menopause. For women who can’t or won’t take hormones, ACOG recommends SSRIs, SNRIs or newer neurokinin-blocking drugs. CBT, exercise, mindfulness, hypnosis and acupuncture get weaker endorsements. The evidence is insufficient to recommend hormones for menopause-related depression.

EV sales keep breaking records

Battery-electric car sales keep hitting new highs, according to energy think tank Ember. Growth outside the U.S. and China is driving the trend, with sales in the rest of the world up an estimated 45% in January through August 2026 compared with the same period last year.

NVIDIA puts AI power on the laptop

NVIDIA’s new RTX Spark chip brings up to a petaflop of AI performance and 128GB of shared memory to laptops, enough to run AI agents, 8K video editing and AI development locally instead of in the cloud. ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft and MSI are launching models starting at $2,599. The real test: will it simplify everyday work, and who can afford it?
